Vos missions en quelques mots
The post-doc will analyze the impact of climate variations on the distribution of Salmonella serovars, using serotyping, modeling and machine learning approaches applied to epidemiological and climatic data collected in France and Poland, intending to improve the prevention and management of food risks in the context of climate change.
More specifically, you will be responsible for :
- Correlate serovar distribution data with climate data from European platforms (Copernicus, AGRI4CAST, MétéoFrance, etc.) using machine learning type tools
- Modelling and forecasting risks using quantitative tools to assess the effects of climate change on food contamination, to propose adaptation and risk prevention measures
- Integrate this risk assessment into a more holistic cost-benefit approach to optimize food safety while reducing environmental and/or economic impacts
In addition, you may have to collect data and analyze data in France and Poland under the supervision of microbiologists.
Profil recherché
Recommended training: PhD in biostatistics, data science, and/or modelling
Desired skills: Proficiency in machine learning tools and statistical analysis software (R, Python).
Experience in: processing and analyzing climatic data would be appreciated.
Skills required: the ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment; autonomy, rigor and initiative; excellent written and oral communication skills.

Descriptif du service
You will be working at UMR 1014 Secalim (SECurité des ALIments et Microbiologie), a joint research unit involving INRAE and Oniris. UMR 1014 Secalim conducts interdisciplinary research into microbiology, food safety and the relationship between environmental factors and microbial pathogens, aiming to characterize and control microbial risk in food products.
Your mission will be to study the impact of climate variations on food risks linked to Salmonella. Climate change is one of the major challenges to global food security. Rising temperatures, droughts, floods and extreme weather events disrupt food production, storage, and distribution. These upheavals also amplify the risks associated with pathogenic bacteria such as Salmonella, the second leading cause of zoonoses in the European Union after Campylobacter, with more than 91,000 cases reported each year. Despite strict hygiene and safety standards, this pathogen remains a persistent threat, with a strong correlation between high summer temperatures and increased cases of foodborne infections (EFSA & ECDC, 2023).
The impacts of climate change are not uniform. In Europe, oceanic (e.g. western France) and continental (e.g. Poland) climatic regions have distinct environmental characteristics that influence the distribution and virulence of Salmonella serovars. Although some studies have explored this phenomenon in North America (Morgado et al., 2021) and Australia (Milazzo et al., 2016).
