Vos missions en quelques mots
MAIN ACTIVITIES / KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1) Support governance and enable decision-making
· Advise the BoR on strategic priorities, policy options and long-term sustainability, drawing on evidence and proposals consolidated by the Coordination Team and Work Packages.
· Support the BoR Chair and Vice-Chair in preparing meetings and agendas, ensuring follow-up on decisions, and monitoring the BoR governance work plan.
· Strengthen governance coherence across ERUA bodies and within member universities through clear mandates, consistent documentation, and transparent decision processes.
2) Drive alliance-wide alignment and equitable participation
· Act as the institutional bridge between the BoR and member universities, ensuring that BoR decisions are communicated clearly, understood, and implemented across the Alliance.
· Promote equitable participation among all member universities and help address governance-level bottlenecks or tensions, in close coordination with the BoR leadership.
· Serve as the permanent contact point for rectors/presidents, maintaining regular institutional-level communication and ensuring smooth information flow among governance bodies.
3) Represent ERUA externally and support future development
· Under the BoR’s mandate, represent ERUA at institutional/strategic level towards external partners, networks, policy-makers, peer alliances and the European Commission.
· Maintain high-level dialogue with the European Commission on alliance positioning and strategic matters;
· Identify strategic opportunities beyond current grants and support the preparation of future initiatives and partnerships, ensuring alignment with ERUA strategy (with operational drafting led by the Programme/Project Manager / Coordination Team as appropriate).
We are seeking a senior leader who combines strategic vision with operational credibility, able to support ERUA’s governance and drive implementation across a complex international partnership.
Profil recherché
Essential qualifications and experience
- Advanced academic degree in a relevant field (Master’s required; PhD/Doctorate preferred).
-Significant senior-level experience (typically 3–5+ years) in European higher education, academic collaboration, research and innovation policy, and/or management of complex academic organisations.
-Strong knowledge of the European higher education landscape, including EU policies in education, research and innovation, and a solid understanding of the European Universities initiative and alliances.
-Demonstrated experience working internationally and engaging effectively with senior institutional leaders and governance bodies.
-Proven ability to lead and develop diverse, multicultural teams, fostering an inclusive and human-centred working culture.
-Sound understanding of financial and project management; experience with EU-funded programmes and grants is highly desirable.
Skills and competencies
· Strategic thinking, with the ability to translate strategy into coordinated action across multiple institutions.
· Excellent interpersonal, intercultural communication and diplomatic skills; strong stakeholder management and networking ability, including at EU level.
· Strong writing skills, including the ability to draft high-quality reports, policy and framework documents.
· High autonomy, sound judgement, and the ability to operate effectively under a governance mandate.
· Willingness to travel regularly to ERUA member universities and relevant sector events.
· Excellent command of English (C1 or equivalent). Good command of French (B2 or equivalent) is necessary; knowledge of other ERUA languages is an advantage.

The European Reform University Alliance (ERUA) is a European Universities alliance of eight member universities, bringing together 81 faculties and a community of around 120,000 students and 10,500 staff. The Alliance includes: Université Paris 8 (France), University of the Aegean (Greece), New Bulgarian University (Bulgaria), SWPS University (Poland), University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain), University of Macerata (Italy), European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) (Germany), and Mykolas Romeris University (Lithuania). ERUA also collaborates with 35+ associated partners across Europe. ERUA is in the process of establishing a legal entity (AISBL under Belgian law) in spring 2026. The position is hosted by Université Paris 8. a higher education institution with 22,500 students, 1,200 academic staff, and more than 750 administrative staff. Paris 8 is the coordinating university of the alliance and the administrative employer of the Secretary General.
Descriptif du service
THE POSITION
The Secretary General leads the central secretariat / Alliance Office based at Université Paris 8. Serving the whole Alliance, the Secretary General is accountable to the Board of Rectors (BoR) and works closely with its Chair and Vice-Chair.
The Secretary General supports the BoR by preparing, shaping and coordinating the implementation of ERUA’s strategy and policies as approved by the BoR. With a particular focus on long-term sustainability and ERUA’s development as a fully-fledged European University, the Secretary General ensures that ERUA’s governance operates smoothly, that member universities are fully engaged, and that strategic decisions translate into coordinated action across the Alliance.
Under mandate from the BoR, the Secretary General represents ERUA externally, including towards the European Commission and strategic partners, while day-to-day project operations, reporting and grant compliance remain the responsibility of the Project Manager and coordination structures.

SALARY, BENEFITS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
· Salary will be discussed with shortlisted candidates. The indicative net salary is approximately €5,000 per month (after Social security contribution), subject to variation depending on relevant experience and applicable conditions.
· The position is administratively hosted by Université Paris 8. The employee's career is managed within Paris 8 University and the line manager is the president of Paris 8 University. Regular travel to ERUA member universities and to sector conferences is expected throughout the term of appointment. Appropriate funding will be provided by Université Paris 8 to enable this.
· Hybrid working: up to two days of remote work per week, subject to organisational needs.
· Annual leave: 51 days per year.
· Contribution to public transport costs, in accordance with the host institution’s policy and applicable regulations.
· Participation in complementary health insurance under certain conditions
· Sustainable mobility allowance for the home-to-work commute (where applicable).
